An insightful book on many aspects of Abraham Lincoln's early life and later career that led, ultimately, to the White House.I especially enjoyed Dr. Freehling's informed thoughts on the negative example set by Lincoln's nomadic and uneducated father for his gifted son. Also, the book is good on both the Kansas-Nebraska Act controversy and the always strained racial politics of border states.Most of all, this book is about describing how a practical moderate politician rose to power (with aid from many people) within the electoral and racial realities of the day and put himself in position to keep the nation as one and, as perhaps as an initially unintended outcome, free all the slaves.Potential readers should know this is not a book about waging the war itself: Grant's name does not even appear.In terms of style, it reads fluidly. My only negative comment is on the too extensive use of the exclamation mark. For example on p. 260, "Abraham Lincoln had long waited ( although not that long!) ..." or on p.230, " Instead U.S. Marines, led by (who else!) Robert E. Lee..."All-in-all, a worthy addition to one's Civil War-era book shelve.
