Abraham Lincoln was the greatest writer of the Civil War as well as its greatest political leader. His clear, beautiful, and at times uncompromisingly severe language forever shaped the nation’sunderstanding of its most terrible conflict. This volume, along with its companion, Abraham Lincoln: Speeches and Writings 1832–1858, comprises the most comprehensive selection ever published. Over 550 speeches, messages, proclamations, letters, and other writings—including the Inaugural and Gettysburg addresses and the moving condolence letter to Mrs. Bixby—record the words and deeds with which Lincoln defended, preserved, and redefined the Union.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook Abraham Lincoln: Speeches and Writings Vol. 2 1859-1865 (LOA #46) (Library of America Abraham Lincoln Edition) has garnered 9 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. In an essay commissioned by Sports Illustrated about Kentucky and the Derby William Faulkner once described Abraham Lincoln’s prose as “simple and matchless”. Simple and matchless it is — simple with its cleaving to and communication of the Truth, matchless, in the grandeur of its eloquence. Sometimes in springtime you’ll see on TV a swollen creek or river rising, rushing, after torrential rains and in the middle of the screen beneath a hovering helicopter and first responders huddled on the shore, one or two secured by a lifeline stepping bravely out into the current, a stranded, wide-eyed, terrified victim with their arms wrapped in desperation around a tree trunk or hanging onto a branch praying and hoping for rescue. Lincoln’s speeches and writings are sort of like that tree trunk and branch. No matter how strong the storm or powerful the current in either our collective or individual lives, they are something to hang onto until the storm passes, the flood subsides, the current slows and either help arrives or else we swim out of danger ourselves. There may always be wars and rumors of wars, as the Bible says — the King James Bible, which is the source of so much of Lincoln’s eloquence — and there will also be the lasting dream of peace and justice, of ‘with malice towards none and charity for all’, a dream that seems so much more real and realizable every time you read even a few pages of this magnificent collection. With Dr. King, surely the greatest and most righteous orator our country has ever produced. Good to read. Good to remember.
